THE JCOBA-NY IMPACT
CONTRIBUTED (JMD) TO JAMAICA COLLEGE & COUNTING
ROBOTICS

Project:
JAMAICA COLLEGE ROBOTICS CLUB
Mission:
Establish and fund the launch of the Jamaica College Robotics Club and transform the school’s STEM Education initiative to 21st Century standard while creating a national model. JCOBANY entered the JC team in the March 2010 FTC competition in NYC. This was the historic and pioneering entry of any school in the entire Caribbean region in the world’s premier robotics competition. To date this record is unbroken.
The ultimate intent of its leadership team was always to one day bring the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) home to Jamaica. That 10-year dream came to fruition in spectacular fashion March 8-9 2019 when the inaugural FIRST Tech Challenge - Jamaica National Robotics Championship (RoboJam) was held at the Karl Hendrickson Auditorium on the JC campus.

EQUIPMENT FOR THE NEW FRANK HAL GYMNASIUM

Mission:
Provided state-of-the-art fitness equipment for the Frank Hall Gymnasium. A full complement of equipment sourced by JCOBA-NY members - shipped and delivered to Jamaica College.
TRACKSTARS

TRACKSTARS MAGAZINE

Mission:
Created the widely acclaimed, first and only publication featuring Jamaica Schools at the annual Penn Relays Carnival. Proceeds used to promote Jamaican athletics and to fund the Penn Relays Team and other Jamaica College initiatives.
COMPUTER LAB

JC COMPUTER LAB

Mission:
During the nascent days of the computer revolution (circa 1990), Principal Ruel Taylor exultantly accepted our meticulously detailed proposal to fund and establish the first Computer Lab at Jamaica College. This was the first formal project for the newly organized JCOBA-NY and one of the first such ventures (if not the first) for a Jamaican High School.

The JC Computer Lab was initially equipped with 10 computers, followed shortly by a donation of another 80 computers. Max Maxwell '57 (English Master at the Lawrenceville School) helped to source the second tranche of computers and equipment for the computer lab.
The following year Principal Taylor in his annual letter to the JCOBA-NY was pleased to report the impact of our effort:
"100 percent passes [attained] in the GCE A Levels Computer Science examination."
Over the years we have consistently done our part to keep obsolescence at bay, by replenishing the Computer Lab with upgraded equipment. The Canadian Chapter contributed notably as well with a donation of 150 refurbished computers. In 2018, JCOBA-NY's latest donation of 250 computers plus printers, projectors, smart boards and peripherals were shipped to JC. This is to date, the largest single donation of computer and related equipment to Jamaica College.
In collaboration with Roger Chang '76, an honorary member of JCOBA-NY, we were a key strategic partner in bringing wireless access to the JC Campus - another first in the nation.
PENN RELAYS

PENN RELAYS
Mission:
The Jamaica College Old Boys Association funds and coordinate the participation of the JC Track and Field Teams at the annual Penn Relays Carnival, by investing tens of thousands of dollars in cash and kind to cover travel, meals accommodations and ancillary support. Our informal support of Penn Relays started prior to the formal establishment of JCOBA-NY in 1990.

CLASSROOM REFURBISHMENT
Mission:
Jamaica College Old Boys Association believes that a functional classroom with ergonomic furniture and integrated 21st Century Technology will greatly enhance the learning experience of the students at JC. Our latest project seek to address that gap, starting with a first shipment of furniture and equipment to JC, inclusive of over 200 desks & chairs, smart boards, projectors, book stands and a digital weather station.
